Our core beliefs and theological foundation
This Statement of Faith sets forth the basic doctrine which we hold to be foundational truths consistent with the teaching of the Holy Scriptures.
This statement has been intentionally kept brief and though it does not address all the details of the relevant truths of our faith, it does summarize those deemed most necessary for understanding the doctrinal position of Bethesda Bible Chapel.
We are a congregation of born-again and baptized believers gathered together by the Holy Spirit, as a local expression of the church, of New Testament pattern. We observe the two ordinances of the Church, in obedience to Christ – water baptism of the believers (by immersion) and the Lord's Supper.
Our primary goals include Worship, Fellowship, Prayer, Evangelism, Bible Teaching and Stewardship.
Acts 2:41-42; 1 Corinthians 11:2; Matthew 28:19-20We believe that the Scriptures (The Holy Bible) which includes the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments, are the revealed Word of God, infallibly given by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and inerrant in the original manuscripts.
We believe that the Scriptures have been given and supernaturally preserved in order that we may certainly know what we are to believe concerning God and what He requires of us. As such, we consider the Bible alone as our final rule and authority for all matters of faith, life and conduct.
Psalm 119:97-104, 160; Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 5:17-18; John 5:46-47; John 10:35; 2 Timothy 3:15-16; Hebrews 1:1-2; 2 Peter 1:21The Triune God: We believe that God is spirit, infinite, eternal, and incomparable in all that He is; and that He is unchangeable in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth. We believe that there is only one living and true God, and that He eternally exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, our Creator, our Redeemer and our Sanctifier.
Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; John 4:24; Psalm 90:2; James 1:17God the Father: We believe God the Father, the first person of the Trinity, as the Creator, reigns over this entire universe with providential care. He is all-powerful, all-loving, all-knowing and all-wise.
Genesis 1:1; 1 Chronicles 29:10; Jeremiah 10:10; Matthew 6:9; Romans 8:14-15God the Son: We believe in the total deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity. He was begotten of the Father through the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, and is true man without ceasing to be God. He was sinless, died on the cross as a perfect sacrifice for our sins, was buried, rose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, and now intercedes as our High Priest.
John 1:1, 14, 18; John 14:8-9; 1 Timothy 3:16God the Holy Spirit: We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, regenerates believers, indwells, guides, instructs, fills, comforts and empowers the believer for godly living.
Mark 13:11; John 14:26; John 16:13; Romans 5:5; 1 Corinthians 3:16; John 16:8-11We believe that the heavens and the earth, and all that is in them, are the immediate work of God in creation. God created man in His own image; male and female He created them. Mankind was created to reflect the image of God, exercise dominion over the earth, and rule over all creatures as stewards of the Most High.
We also believe that God sovereignly directs and governs all that He has made, so that they fulfill the end for which they were created.
Genesis 1:1, 26-28; Daniel 4:35; Hebrews 11:3; Matthew 10:29; Revelation 4:11We believe that it was by Adam's willful sin against God that man lost his spiritual life and fell into sin and misery. Being fallen in Adam, we are by nature children of wrath, under the condemnation of God and corrupted in body and soul, prone to evil and liable to eternal death.
Being dead in our trespasses and sins, we are unable to help ourselves and cannot be delivered from this dreadful state except through the unmerited grace of God our Savior. Every man and woman is totally deprived and needs a Savior.
Genesis 2:17; 3:6-8; Romans 5:18; Ephesians 2:1-3; Romans 3:9-19; 6:23Redemption Planned: God has not left mankind to perish in its sin, but has from all eternity, in grace and mercy, chosen to save unto Himself a people which no man can number.
Romans 8:29-30; 9:14-24; Ephesians 1:4-5; 2:4-7; Colossians 1:13Redemption Accomplished: God has redeemed His people through the Lord Jesus Christ, who took on human flesh and was born of a virgin to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. His death at Calvary was a representative and substitutionary sacrifice.
Hebrews 2:17; 9:26; Galatians 3:13; 1 Peter 2:24; Ephesians 1:14; Revelation 5:9-10Redemption Assured: Jesus Christ died for our sins and was raised for our justification. Having offered one sacrifice for sin for all time, He ascended into heaven and continually makes intercession for His people. Our salvation is secure and we are sealed by the Holy Spirit.
Romans 4:25; Hebrews 10:12; 7:25; Ephesians 1:20-22; Romans 8:38-39; John 10:29Redemption Applied: Christ died for the sins of the whole mankind. The Spirit works faith in us through regeneration, unites us to Christ, and continues to renew us according to the image of God.
2 Thessalonians 2:13; Titus 3:5-6; Ephesians 2:1-8; 1 John 5:1; Colossians 3:1; 2 Corinthians 4:16; Romans 8:29-30We believe that God requires of us that out of a true sense of our sin and misery and an apprehension of His mercy in Christ, we should repent and trust Jesus Christ alone for salvation. Being united to Him, we receive pardon for our sins and are accepted as righteous in God's sight, only because of the righteousness of Christ imputed to us and received by faith alone.
Only in this manner do we have the right to be a child of God. Obedience, good works or any kind of human effort do not earn or retain a person's salvation.
Joel 2:13; Acts 26:20; Jeremiah 31:18; Acts 4:12; Romans 5:19; Galatians 2:16; Ephesians 1:7; John 1:12We believe that the church is the body of Christ made up of all true believers and that the Lord Jesus Christ is the one and only Head of His church. God has established His church in the world and endowed it with the ministry of the Word and the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord's Supper.
As members of Christ's body, we should devote ourselves to collective Worship, the study of God's Word, fellowship with the saints, remembrance through the Lord's Supper, and prayer. While each believer is a part of the Universal Church, each local church is an autonomous body. We practice the priesthood of all believers.
1 Corinthians 12:27; Matthew 28:19; 1 Corinthians 11:23; Acts 2:42; 1 Peter 2:1-2; Hebrews 10:25; 1 Peter 3:15We believe that the Lord Jesus has commissioned His church to proclaim the gospel of God's grace to all men and make disciples of all nations. It is our privilege and duty to present Christ Jesus to the lost world in order that, through the power of the Holy Spirit, they may come to put their trust in God through Him.
Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 5:20; Acts 4:12; Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 9:16; 1:21Having been pardoned and accepted for Christ's sake, it is our duty to walk in the Spirit, doing that which is right, fulfilling the obedience we owe to Christ our King. We should ever reflect in our life and conduct the perfect example that has been set for us by our Lord, who has granted to us His Holy Spirit so that we may do the good works which God has prepared beforehand.
Romans 6:1-18; 8:4; Galatians 5:16-17, 22-23; 1 Peter 2:21; Colossians 1:9-10; Ephesians 2:10We believe in the imminent return of our Lord Jesus Christ to take his Church out of this world, before the great tribulation. Those who die in Christ before His return shall be made perfect in holiness and go home to the Lord. When He returns, we shall be raised in glory and made perfectly blessed in the full enjoyment of God to all eternity.
We believe in the return of Christ for the Millennium reign, after the tribulation. After the Millennium reign, all those whose name is not found written in the Book of Life will be judged at the great white throne and cast into the lake of fire.
1 Thessalonians 1:10; 4:16; Titus 2:13; John 14:1-3; 1 Corinthians 15:51-53; Matthew 25:31; Luke 1:31-33; Acts 1:10-11; Revelation 20:7, 11-15; Daniel 12:2Elders: We believe that the Scriptural pattern for spiritual oversight of the local church is through plurality of elders. An elder should be a person of maturity, who can take responsibility and leadership, and can protect, lead, and feed the flock. Elders are appointed by the Holy Spirit and recognized by the local church.
Acts 14:23; 20:17; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Timothy 3:1-7; 5:17-20; 1 Peter 5:1-3; Hebrews 13:17; 1 Thessalonians 5:12Deacons: The role of the Deacons in a church is a supportive role, as co-laborers with the elders, ministering mainly to the physical and material needs of the congregation.
Acts 6:1-5; 1 Timothy 3:8-13Worship Service: We have an open worship service where the entire congregation is actively involved in the worship of God, through Jesus Christ and led by the Holy Spirit. Men of our congregation are free to represent us in worship through praise, scripture reading, hymns, exhortation, or prayer.
Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 14:1-33, 40; 1 Thessalonians 5:19The Lord's Supper: We observe the Lord's Supper as the central part of our worship service every week. It is a communion for believers whereby we corporately remember the Lord Jesus Christ and proclaim His death until He comes.
Luke 22:19-20; Acts 20:7; 2:42; 1 Corinthians 11:23-32Baptism: The New Testament presents Baptism as an act of obedience whereby a person publicly identifies with the Lord Jesus Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. We believe that baptism should be by immersion, administered only to those who profess faith in Christ.
Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:41; 8:12; 16:31-34; 10:47-48; Romans 6:3-5Church Membership: Membership is extended to all believers who are baptized, have a consistent Christian life and testimony, and desire to be in full fellowship with the Church, accepting our doctrinal statement and responsibilities.
